The Indian Craft Shop Celebrates
65 Years in the Nation's Capital

DC – June 26, 2003.
-- In September, The Indian Craft Shop, located inside
the U.S. Department of the Interior, will celebrate 65
years of representing American Indian arts and crafts in
the Nation's Capital. To commemorate, the Shop will present
a three-week show to focus on the importance of continuing
the arts through the generations. Works from highlighted
artists will be on exhibit for three weeks, with three
days of guest artist demonstrations and appearances. |

The 65th Anniversary Show, "It's
All Relative," is
September 8th through September 26th, with guest artists
on September 18th - 20th. Artist demonstrations each day
to include pottery, jewelry, beadwork and basketry from 12
noon until 4:00 p.m.

"It's
All Relative" will
feature artists from families which have been continuing
the arts
through the generations. Artwork from the following families
will be exhibited: Barnes (Passamaquoddy), Caesar (Pawnee),
Ettawageshik (Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odowa Indians),
Fragua (Jemez), Mayac (Inupiat), Quandalacy (Zuni), Paddlety (Kiowa), Red
Cloud (Lakota) and Welch (Cherokee). Craft
areas will include basketry, jewelry, pottery, wood carving,
walrus
ivory carving, fetish carving, ribbonwork, leatherwork,
as well as, bead and quillwork. |
Guest artists will include Angela
and Gerald Barnes; Bruce, Arlene, Adam, Amy
and Crystal Caesar; Frank and
Joe Ettawageshik; and,
Juanita, Cliff, BJ and Glendora Fragua.

The Shop has an ever-changing selection of art. Because most of
these items are one-of-a-kind works of art, we are unable to
publish a catalogue. However, if you have a specific area of
interest and can give us a price range, we can easily e-mail
images of art available in the Shop.
The
Indian Craft Shop, managed by Guest Services, Inc., represents
authentic American Indian arts and crafts from over 45 tribal areas
within the United States. The Shop has been inside the Department
of the Interior since 1938 and is under historic preservation.
Location/Hours: The Public Entrance to the U.S. Department of the Interior is at
18th & C Streets, NW. Handicap Access is available at 18th & E Streets.
A photo ID is needed for access to the building. Open Monday through
Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the third Saturday of each
month from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Public Transportation: The Farragut West and Farragut North metro stops are closest to
the Shop. Buses S1 and 80 stop at 18th and C Streets and are
within a block of the Metro stops. Buses are $.25 with a metrorail
transfer (pick one up at the Metro rail stop before you get on
the train). There is metered street parking and the closest parking
garage is at 17th and New York (3 1/2 blocks away).
