Micah Vogel is a carver
from the Makah Indian Nation, located on the northwestern tip of
the Olympic Peninsula in the state of Washington. Makah life is
closely linked to the sea, and many rely to this day on the wealth
of resources that the ocean provides. The art of the Northwest Coast
is resplendent with images and motifs derived from aquatic animals
and the stories which give meaning to the relationship between the
people and their environment.
Although he is one of
the newer Makah artists, Micah has been well recognized for his
work. He has won Best of Category at the Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial
show and has been awarded ribbons at the Indian Art Northwest show
in Portland, Oregon. The Washington State Arts Commission selected
him to participate as a mentor in their apprenticeship program,
and his work has joined that of his grandfather in the permanent
collection of the Smithsonian Institution.
The Indian Craft Shop represents artists from

of the Interior federal building at 18th and C Streets, the Shop
