The
Indian Craft Shop is highlighting a diverse collection
of Santa Clara Pueblo pottery
from October 12 – 22. Santa Clara
Pueblo, located along the Rio Grande River in New Mexico,
has long been recognized for its highly polished black
and red pottery. This is a special opportunity for visitors
to see the variety of pottery styles and designs from Santa
Clara Pueblo today, most of which are still made using
ancient building, polishing and outdoor firing techniques.

Meet
Guest Artist Joe Baca – Pottery Demonstration --
Discover the ancient techniques of this type of pottery
making during Joe Baca’s Pottery Demonstrations
on October 14, 15, and 16 from 10:00a.m. – 12:00p.m.
and 1:00p.m. – 3:00p.m. each day. Joe Baca is
a native of Santa Clara Pueblo and an award-winning
potter who uses traditional, contemporary and realistic
designs. He often uses the “sgraffito” technique,
finely scratching designs into the clay. As Joe and
his wife Nora explain and demonstrate the processes
of pottery from collecting the clay to the final firing
process, guests will also learn about the spiritual
connections of the potter to Mother Earth.
Joe
considers pottery making as part of the fiber of the Santa
Clara Pueblo people. “The
clay comes from Mother Earth near the Village and I strive
to become one with the Spirit of the Clay. Together we
can make vessels of beauty for others to enjoy”, Joe
states. |
